Floyd College of Medicine (ESFCOM) at Washington State University is embarking on the accreditation and development of a next generation medical school designed to train students to be physician leaders, who innovate, adapt and discover in an ever changing healthcare landscape.

The School is now inviting applications for the position of Scientific Assistant. Summary of Duties: Collaborates with the project Principal Investigator (PI) on National Institutes of Health (NIH) and industry funded research grants involving multiple performance sites and community partners.

The majority of duties will be focused on studies investigating experimental 1) technology, 2) behavioral, and 3) pharmaceutical interventions for substance use disorders and related health problems (e.g., infectious disease). The Scientific Assistant performs human subjects research including the design of research approaches and identifying and defining research problems, consenting and interacting with participants, collect, analyze and interpret research data, ensure quality control, make improvement to techniques and interpretation, assist with the depositing of data into secure NIH databases, assist in preparing journal publications and progress reports, manage and maintain daily laboratory operations, construct and review study protocols, IRB documents, measures, electronic data capture systems, and other documentation necessary for studies, and conduct general laboratory organization; order supplies, keep inventory records and maintain a safe working environment.

This position requires close collaboration with both the NIH and an industry partners in the development of novel technologies and interventions. Duties and Responsibilities: 40% Study Design and Management
• Collaborates with the project Principal Investigator (PI) on a National Institutes of Health (NIH) funded research grant involving multiple performance sites and community partners.

The majority of duties will be focused on studies investigating interventions for substance use disorders and related health problems.
• Works with a collaborative team of interdisciplinary high-level researchers and clinicians in the implementation of several research studies including recruitment and intervention.
• Collaborates with the PI in the development and design of research projects, protocols, experiments, techniques and procedures to improve the techniques used in study procedures.

Identifies, defines, and solves research method and project implementation problems in substance abuse interventions, working with community health clinics and hospitals.
• Analyze and evaluate current methodologies and modify or adapt to fit research project goals.
• Oversees all essential research budgets, sub
– awards and subcontracts; review and approve invoices and financial reports.
• Develops a study implementation plan designed to ensure project timelines are met; engaging and working with community partners in research activities; resolving problems as they arise and taking action to ensure adherence to protocol requirements.
• Identifies, defines, and solves research method and project implementation problems in contingency management interventions, working with community mental health partnerships.
• Conducts internal audits of data and participant documents to be shared between the investigator and study sponsors, Institutional Review Board (IRB), and other relevant governing bodies and partners. 30% Research and Laboratory Operations and Coordination
• Independently conduct research by applying established or modified methods.
• Coordinate, manage, and maintain daily lab operations.
• Provides oversight and supervision over study procedures for recruiting, intervening, and collecting and summarizing data as needed.
• Reviews and assesses study data and utilizes study data to prepare Institutional Review Board applications, modifications and status reports.
• Maintain regulatory compliance and reporting.
• Analyzes project data to ensure that projects comply with all requirements of the WSU Human Subjects Review Board.

Prepares and analyzes data for technical reports and for presentation to sponsoring agencies as needed.
• Oversees the development of forms, questionnaires, and scoring systems for several studies; and analyzes data to design and write technical reports including data dictionaries, data handling procedures, and data flow diagrams.
• Assess laboratory inventory and order lab supplies and equipment as necessary.
• Develops research designs, data collection methods, and strategies for data management and communicates these strategies to research staff and community partners.
• Development of program and project ideas and preparing proposals and marketing materials to obtain collaboration, participation, support and funding. 15% Data Management
• Develops and monitors a system for tracking data operational issues, challenges, and/or problems and work directly with Information Technology (IT) staff to resolve problems as they arise.
• Develops data collection strategies and databases for several projects.
• Manage the transfer of data across sites and maintain data security and restricted access to the data.
• Establish and implement data collection, cleaning and quality control procedures for multiple projects.

Evaluate research data from multiple sites to ensure quality control.
• Reviews and edits scientific papers and manuscripts summarizing study findings including manuscripts or presentations at scientific conferences, as well as the preparation of routine programmatic progress reports.
• Prepares and delivers reports on study progress to PI
• Provides advice to research staff concerning project related tasks such as gathering information for annual reports, creating PowerPoint presentations and proofreading reports, publications and other documents. 10% Supervision and Training
• Supervise student workers, interns and part time help.
• Develops training material and written instructions for study procedures and ensures that all research staff, including contracted field staff in Washington and other states, is trained, knowledgeable, and aware of studies/projects, protocol, and confidentiality.
• Directs the daily responsibilities of employees to ensure timely completion of research activities, providing support as needed and coordinating all logistical efforts.
• Training and direct the work of undergraduate and graduate students during in vivo experimentation, laboratory procedures and data analysis and records management.
• Facilitates opportunities for research personnel to meet the training requirements for the responsible conduct of research with human subjects. 5% Other Duties as Assigned Required Qualifications: A Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate related scientific or engineering discipline and three (3) years of progressively responsible related professional research experience.

Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.

A Master’s degree in an appropriate related scientific or engineering discipline may be substituted for up to one year of the required work experience. Additional Requirements:
• Experience in human subjects research.
• Demonstrated proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office suite products.
• Experience developing, managing, or maintaining electronic databases.
• Willing to work evenings and weekends on occasion, and travel as necessary, to meet the needs of the project and clients.
• A valid driver’s license and insurance is required at time of hire. Preferred Qualifications:
• Master’s degree in relevant field.
• Experience preparing documentation for Institutional Review Boards (IRBs).
• Experience consenting participants for human subject research.
• Experience working independently.
• Experience working with people with substance use disorders, and/or related health problems such as infants with neonatal abstinence syndrome.
• Experience managing research studies.
• Experience with data collection instruments (e.g., REDCap) and/or other databases (e.g., Amazon web services).
• Experience preparing technical reports.
• Experience authoring professional presentations or manuscripts.
