Inpatient Services Manager

Shriners Hospitals For Children

This is a Full-time position in Spokane, WA posted November 22, 2021.

Under the direction and guidance of the DPCS, responsible to administer, promote, develop and coordinate the Inpatient Services Department. Oversee the development and implementation of patient care for pediatric patients in an Inpatient and acute care settings. This position works in close coordination with other patient care service departments and in close communication with the medical staff in order to best utilize available Inpatient Services resources in providing quality patient care. Participates in a multidisciplinary approach to care and provides consultation to the health care team. The manager is responsible for maintaining a minimum of 30% direct patient care time. Excellent communication skills, both written and oral are an essential part of this position. This is an exempt position with 24 hour accountability for service.

Job Requirements:

Patient Care  (20%)

  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to evaluate, develop and implement Inpatient Services interventions for patients accounting for diagnosis, developmental age, medical and psychosocial history.
  • Conducts assessments, develops and implements treatment plans and evaluates patient’s progress towards goals using evidence based practice.
  • Works with healthcare team, along with the patient and family, in treatment implementation.
  • Documents in clear and timely patient encounters according to professional standards of practice, hospital policies and Joint Commission standards.
  • Actively promotes and supports nursing research and performance improvement projects.
  • Demonstrates critical thinking skills necessary to assess and resolve problems.


Leadership (20%)

  • Evaluates staff, department needs, and overall department contributions to the organization and patient care.
  • Fosters collaboration and teamwork among the department staff and entire organization.
  • Provides guidance, direction, and mentoring to staff.
  • Leads the establishment of department goals and strategic planning with staff in accordance to hospital strategic plan and goals.
  • Reviews productivity, effectiveness of programs and institutes changes to improve services as needed.
  • Develops and updates departmental policies and procedures.
  • Oversees department student programs.
  • Sets positive example in performance, attitude, adherence to policies and support of hospital leadership.
  • Ensures the department is in compliance with professional standards and ethics, along with Joint Commission, labor laws and other regulatory organizations.
  • Participates on hospital committees, collaborates on new programs and performance improvement activities as requested by DPCS/NE.
  • Demonstrates effective delegation of departmental tasks, ensures staff training as appropriate.


Fiscal Responsibilities (20%)

  • Manages department budget, salaries, and staffing.
  • Includes staff in fiscal management and cost containment strategies.


Human Resources (20%)

  • Manages human resources for department via workforce planning, employment decisions, reward and recognition, performance issue management, identification of current/future needs and skill sets.
  • Keeps employee turnover to a minimal. Looks for ways to maintain a high level of morale.
  • Administers policies in a fair and consistent manner.


Professional Development (20%)

  • Participates in continuing education opportunities to keep current in nursing professions, along with leadership and management practices.
  • Identifies areas for professional growth, goals and pursues skills advancement.

Required –

  1. BSN Degree.
  2. 1 year supervisory/management.
  3. State of WA RN license, AND
  4. Basic Life Support (BLS) or within 30 days AND
  5. Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) within 3 months.

Preferred –

1. 2 years Pediatric Nursing experience
